What was going on in the world when Orwell wrote 1984?

Orwell wrote this book around the same time WWII had ended, the detonation of the atomic bomb and where communism was still a fear.

How does your element give you any hints about the novel’s unfolding social commentary? Your blog discussion should end up focusing on this element.

The setting of the novel kind of gave me a hint about the government controlling things. The telescreens gave a big hint about being monitored and not everyone wants to be watched.

1984 setting

The setting of the book basically takes place in London, England in 1984. Chapter one starts off with the main character Winston Smith returning to his home. He is unable to take the elevator up because it is always out of service so he takes the stairs and everytime he gets on a new set of staircase, he sees a poster that says "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU." Winston is a member of the ruling class and there is this device called "telescreen" and it monitors the action of the citizens.
